You can expect a refund if you have paid tax more than the actual tax liability. You can track your Income Tax refund status once the filing of ITR is done. You will get your refund credited to your bank account, once the claim is accepted by the income tax department.
You will get the tax refund directly credited into your bank account provided while filing ITR. The tax refund takes 10 days to be credited into your account after the assessment process is completed.

3 Ways on How to check Income Tax Refund Status Online
#1. Checking ITR refund status through NSDL site
Step 1: Go to NSDL website.
Step 2: Click on the ‘Services’ menu and click on ‘Status Tax Refunds’. Now, click ‘Status of Income Tax Refunds’ button on the left-hand side,
Step 3: Enter the details- Permanent Account Number (PAN), the Assessment Year for which you are looking for refund and Captcha code. (You can check refund status for past 10 years.)
Step 4: Hit the submit button, refund status would be displayed on your screen similar to the screenshot below.
#2. Check ITR refund status through Income-Tax e-filing Portal
Step 1: Go to Income-Tax e-filing Portal . Log in with your e-Filing login credentials (You can register if you don’t have login id-password).
Step 2: Enter your user ID, password, and Captcha code.
Step 3: Go to My Account and click on “Refund/Demand Status”.
Step 4: Click on ‘View Return And Forms’ as shown in the page below.
Step 5: Select ‘Income Tax Returns’ from the drop-down menu and then select the relevant assessment year.
Step 6: Click on submit and your refund status will be displayed.
Offline Ways to Check Income Tax Refund Status
#1. Check ITR refund status via phone call
You can call the toll-free number of the Income Tax department for income tax refund status related queries. The number is 1800-425-2229.
SBI is the refund banker of the tax department and you can at SBI’s toll-free number: 1-800-4259760, to check for the refund status.
The last resort of help would be contacting Aaykar Sampark Kendra at 0124-2438000.
#2. Visiting nearest tax office
Alternatively, you could always visit your nearest tax office to get the information about your tax refund.

Types of Incomes Tax Refund Status
You may get any of the following types of status when enquiring about tax refund status online:
1. No e-Filing has been done for this assessment year
In case if have not e-filed your tax return.
2. Not Determined
Your refund request is still under-process and the IT department is taking time to process your request.
3. Refund Paid
Check your bank account to confirm the receipt for a tax refund.
4. No demand no refund
You would receive notice if you have filed a tax return asking for a tax refund while the department calculation shows nothing is payable.
5. ITR processed refund determined and sent out to Refund Banker
You will have to wait for 10 days to reflect a refund into your bank account.
6. Refund Unpaid
There could be many reasons for unpaid refund i.e. changes in address, spelling mistake in name, incorrect IFSC/MICR code, or bank account number. Do contact your jurisdictional assessing office or do a request for reissue of refund.
7. Demand determined
If you had asked for the refund but department calculation shows tax payable by you.
8. Contact Jurisdictional Assessing Officer
You have to approach the jurisdictional assessing officer as the department needs additional documents to process your tax refund request.

How to request for Reissue of Refund?
Step 1: Logon to www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in with your user ID, Password, Birth Date and Captcha code.
Step 2: Go to ‘My Account’. Click on ‘Service Request’ from menu.
Step 3: In the ‘Request Type’ click on ‘New Request’, And select ‘Request Category’ as ‘Refund Reissue’.
Step 4: Click on the ‘Submit’ button for which year ITR refund you want to reissue.
Step 5 – Fill in the ‘Bank Account Number’, ‘Account Type’. ‘IFSC Code’ and ‘Bank Name’ and click on ‘Submit’.
That’s all. After a few days, your refund will be credited to your bank account.
