5 Best Mobile Insurance in India 2020 (Review & Comparison)

Updated on 28 Jan 2020.

Smartphones are getting expensive day by day and the best thing to save money on any kind of damage or device lost is to get your phone insured.

Most of the companies provide insurance only on new phones and you have to research in advance so that you can make the decision about which company’s plan you have to go for while buying a new phone.

Let’s discuss in details about Mobile insurance and top 5 mobile insurances in India.

What Mobile Insurance covers

Typically a mobile insurance plan would provide cover against the followings:

  • Accidental Physical Damages
  • Damages caused by liquid
  • Stolen in burglary including theft and housebreaking
  • Damaged caused due to fire, explosion or lightening
  • Suffers damage during riot or strike

However, risk covers vary from company to company and different plans cover different kinds of risks. Some companies only offer damage protection, but they don’t provide theft or stolen cover. While other companies give you complete protection. I have covered both types of companies in this article.

What Mobile Insurance doesn’t cover

There are a few instances under which your mobile insurer would not liable to compensate for your loss:

  • Theft, loss or damage during usage by the third party, not the owner.
  • Overloading and experimentation involving parting of the device.
  • Damage by wear and tear or from any process of cleaning or repairing
  • Losses due to intentional, dishonest, criminal or fraudulent acts of self or family members
  • Loss or damage due to poor maintenance and pet bites

Waiting period –  2 to 3 days.

Factors that reduce/reject the claim

Reasons for the reduction in claim amount

#1. Depreciation

Depreciation is the biggest factor that reduces your claim by a significant amount.

The depreciation values are usually as follows:

  • 0 to 3 months – 15% to 20%
  • 3-6 months – 25% to 30%
  • 6-12 months – 50% (in some cases the depreciation can be as high as 75%)

#2. Co-Payment Clause

Co-payment means a fixed amount that the claimant has to bear. Most of the mobile insurance policies have a standard clause of 5% co-payment, which has to be borne by the insured. Sometimes this may be as high as 10%.

For example, if your claim amount is Rs. 30,000, you may have to pay Rs. 1,500 as a co-pay ratio of 5%.

Reasons for rejection of claim

Your claim can be rejected if:

  • Damage or Theft occurred when the third party was using the gadget
  • Repair is not done at an authorized service center
  • FIR about the theft is not filed within 48 hours
  • Not able to prove the phone is stolen

  1. Hi,

It was a good informative Post. I would like to mention that BigC used to give their own Mobile Insurance for 1 year with a minimal premium. I purchased a Samsung a few years ago with them for a cost of Rs 10000/- or so and the premium for 1 year was Rs 350.
obviously, the Insurance companies should take care of the similar interest while processing the claims as that of while accepting premiums https://bit.ly/2z1LbId

  2. Garima Jhawar

A very elaborated article covering everything about mobile insurance.

Without any doubt, one should insure his/her phone. Since smartphones are also holding a major part of our expenditure, so in the case of any unwanted damage to the phone, you can get some monetary refund, then what’s the harm in it.

At least, the total loss is compensated by a reasonable amount from the mobile insurance company.

Personally, I got my phone insured from GizmoHelp. I heard about it a lot and I am very much satisfied with their plans. One can check more details from their website.

    1. You are an employee of Gizmo and writing reviews here as a customer. This shows the ethics level of this company.

  3. Hi Sanyam, please share if the data available with you that what would be the market share of Mobile Insurance industry in India ?

  4. Hi,

It was a good informative article. I would like to mention that UniverCell used to give their own Mobile Insurance for 1 year with a minimal premium. I purchased a Nokia Phone a few years ago with them for a cost of Rs 6,000/ or so and the premium for 1 year was Rs 250. It included the theft/repairs. Not sure whether they still continue or not.

Ultimately the Insurance companies should show the similar interest while processing the claims as that of while accepting premiums 🙂

    Cheers,
    Raghavan alias Saravanan M

  5. It’s good idea to buy insurance by paying premium than purchasing new phone.

These companies should allow insurance of old mobile phone also.

    Very Information post Sanyam
